My annual New Year's mix - best to all of you in 2011!  This mix is partially for head boppers and hip swingers and partially for the under appreciated skeptic and cynic sitting in the corner while the others flail around mindlessly.  Here's for the ups and downs of the nighttime, the evening lulls and drink breaks, and for the tea sippers or outsiders who dance in their head while observing the crowd.

This is a list of the Funky Soul Burner's Top Albums of the Year.  Last year, I did a Top 25 List, and this year the Top 25 is dedicated to albums that I found to change the perspective and the face of music in this ever-evolving new age industry (sans CDs and physical markets).  Artists are forced to be more creative with their marketing, and they have a wider range of freedom when it comes to distribution.  Some artists strive, some fail.  I would like to think that Darwin has had it in for the music industry the past few years, and I cannot wait to see how it all pans out. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER WONDERFUL YEAR!

The 25 Facelifting Albums and Artists:

1.            Kanye West: MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY / G.O.O.D. FRIDAYS - Love him or hate him, "Malcolm West has the whole nation standing at attention," as he rightfully boasts on the second track, "Gorgeous."  With the wonderfully and eclectically composed album of the year in over 15 major music critic's minds, it really is just the perfect dismount to an already triumphant year for Kanye.  In this one album, which he has meticulously crafted and scaled down to twelve solid songs (includes bonus track), he pays homage to so many artists that precede him including King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Aphex Twin, Michael Jackson, as well as captures beautifully the current pop culture - he is the Jean Michel Basquiat of hip hop.  On the other hand, his marketing campaign of G.O.O.D. Fridays included some of hip hop's best in Mos Def, Jay-Z, Q-Tip, Lupe Fiasco, Pusha T, Pete Rock, Common, John Legend, and many others as free tracks for every Friday leading up to the release of the album.  Twelve tracks overall, in my opinion, were all worthy of a second amazing album, including my favorite track of the year featuring Jay-Z and Pete Rock called, "The Joy."  This track represented all of the roots of hip hop and funk, and included some of the most profound verses of the year all wrapped in one amazing track.  With the addition of his directorial 30+ minute music film, "The Runaway," Kanye conquered the music industry, and hopefully raised that bar, once again, to give hope for a better craft in years to come.

2.            Janelle Monáe: THE ARCHANDROID - This was my album of the year until Hurricane Kanye broke down the levees.  Janelle's album is a close second to Kanye's, and certainly provided a new bump in the Atlanta crunk; fresh, clean, intelligent, and near perfect!  I'm already looking forward to her next album.

3.            Bio Boi: SIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT: THE SON OF CHICO DUSTY - Another Atlanta masterpiece.  Without Andre 3000, and long awaited, Big Boi and his many styles busts out one fantastic album.

4.            Four Tet: THERE IS LOVE IN YOU - Nobody makes electronica the way this man does, and it should be shown throughout my mixes.  He makes melody groove like '70s slow funk and churns your hips better than any drug and trance combination ever presented.

5.            Deftones: DIAMOND EYES - Without their lead bassist, Chi Cheng, who is in a coma after a car accident, The Deftones scratched any music recorded with Chi up to that point, hired Sergio Vega of the masterful band, Quicksand, to knock out this gem of an album.  Where rock has failed miserably, Deftones still reign supreme.

6.            Bonobo: BLACK SANDS

7.            Menomena: MINES

8.            Black Milk: ALBUM OF THE YEAR

9.            The Roots: HOW I GOT OVER

10.            Andreya Triana: LOST WHERE I BELONG

The walk is long with the shoe soles solely limping along braced around the ankles mechanically pushing horizons in sun-ups and sunsets, night-downs and night risings, so the wanderer is here, now, forcing his way through the prickling of cactus thorn wild burying himself in the heat and drought; you can't keep on, keep going on like this, the heart says, but the mind ain't listenin' this time.  No, not this time. I still got distance to tread, and these here shoe soles aren't yet callused up and flesh-tone...

Common STATE OF CLARITY (SOLAR REMIX) - Dedicated to the late Guru, or Keith Elam, of Gang Starr and Jazzmatazz who died on April 19th due to complications with cancer.  Guru went into a coma after a cardiac arrest on February 28th, and I am not so sure it is truthfully known if he awoke from the coma only to later pass, or if he never awakened.  The story is convoluted due the validity, or lack-thereof, in letters around the time of his death.  Nonetheless, the world of hip hop and music surely lost an innovator and a voice of pop culture.

Dear Oil,

I wanted to send this message of love for all your wonderful contributions to our livelihood as beings on this ugly blue and green earth.  If it weren't for your slick and thick oozing self, we would be stuck with crystal clear oceans, white sands, and happy ecosystems.  Not to mention, we love your plastic, your fuel, and your hazy brown complexion when you burn; you glide gracefully through our atmosphere and through our lungs.  What would our wars, our world be without you?  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

RSC: The effective process in the cleansing the mind where brainwaves and soundwaves connect in-sequence.  Neurons will fire to the beat, the music will flash visuals along the neural tissue called the cerebral cortex - Reflect, Breathe, and Cleanse!

Podcast #56 R.S.C.: Reflective Spiritual Cognition Track Listing:

    1.    (0:00:35) Son House GRINNIN' IN YOUR FACE - check out how interesting a blues song can be while clapping off-beat.  Almost not even sure why he decides to clap.  I've never thought of this before, but if you're a musician, better a singer, I guess, have you ever tried to sing in time and clap off-beat?  It must be incredibly difficult.  Perhaps one would argue that you can never be off-beat, since it's all creation and all relevant and time is only relative :)
    2.    (0:02:30) The Raconteurs BLUE VEINS - Jack White's favorite song of all-time, 'Grinnin' In Your Face,' by Son House, so it's only natural to put Jack following Son.
    3.    (0:06:15) TV On The Radio A METHOD
    4.    (0:10:26) CocoRosie PROMISE
    5.    (0:13:55) Savath & Savalas OLHAS - leave it up to Prefuse 73's Scott Herran to produce an abstract track such as this, along with his other band mates with Savath.
    6.    (0:15:01) Bibio THE PALM OF YOUR WAVE
    7.    (0:17:16) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah GIMMIE SOME SALT - heard this group was a little shaky live, but this track is pretty dope!
    8.    (0:20:08) Jose Gonzalez CROSSES

    14.    (0:46:23) Whitest Boy Alive HIGH ON THE HEELS
    15.    (0:49:23) Modeselektor GET WASTED IN SILENCE
    16.    (0:50:11) NPR: Fresh Air with Terry Gross INTERVIEW WITH JILL BOLTE TAYLOR (OVERLAID/MIXED WITH BOTH MODESELEKTOR & DJ SHADOW) - this is one of the most fascinating interview I've ever heard, and couldn't help but to find a way to stick it in a mix.  This track by Modeselektor sounds like neurons firing, and what better way to emphasize that than to include an interview with a neurologist who experienced a hemmorrhagic stroke and lived to retell her entire living?  If you're interested, like me, check out her book, My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor.  She basically had to relearn living from year 1 and relearn, in a sense, to be a neurologist again - her left hemisphere was swimming in blood, damaging her linear thinking and language, but her right hemisphere knew the pictures and creations.  Imagine knowing a picture of a tree when shown a tree, but not knowing what it is in language.  This interview itself is special, because her voice is so fluid and constant that it works perfectly with the music all the way through, and into the DJ Shadow track.  This is off the the 5.15.2009 podcast, however, the original interview withe Terry was a year before this one aired.   As I said, brilliant interview with Terry Gross, one of the best in the business!
    17.    (0:52:16) DJ Shadow LIVE Show Medley: Unkle feat. Kool G Rap LONELY SOULS - DJ Shadow's LIVE! In Tune & On Time is one of my all time favorite records, and I wanted to include one of the most rocking sections of his live set here.
    18.    (0:55:09) DJ Shadow LIVE Show Medley: LOST & FOUND - one of the best drum beats in modern pop music, provided by U2's Larry Mullen, Jr.  This drum cadence begins the famous song, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.'
    19.    (0:58:02) DJ Shadow LIVE Show Medley: WHAT DOES YOUR SOUL LOOK LIKE (PART 3)
    20.    (1:01:13) DJ Shadow LIVE Show Medley: MUTUAL SLUMP

It's easy to subscribe to any podcast using iTunes, even ones that aren't available in the iTunes Store. To subscribe, find and copy the podcast's feed URL. In the "Advanced" menu, select "Subscribe to Podcast" and paste the feed URL into the dialog box.

Ok, so all you have to do is follow the above mentioned process, and then when the URL dialog box pops up on your screen, all you have to do is COPY and PASTE the following into that dialog box:

http://funkysoulburner.libsyn.com/rss

iTunes will automatically get all information from my site and broadcast it through your iTunes on your computer!  iTunes will automatically show all the available mixes right there on your program, and you can simply download any (or all) of the mixes through iTunes.  This is far more efficient and beneficial than saving each audio file directly onto your computer from my webpage directly.

If you are having trouble doing this, you can either write me, or you can continue to just download each episode from this page.
